Hogwarts scarf

Hogwarts scarf
My TikTok video about this scarf was such a hit that it became the most popular on my profile, so I thought I'd make a more detailed tutorial here so that everyone can enjoy it. So welcome ๐Ÿ’“

๐ŸŒฟ Materials

  • Yarn: Two colours โ€“ your main colour (deep blue, red, green, or yellow depending on your Hogwarts house) and a contrast colour for the stripes (silver, gold, black).
  • Hook: Tunisian crochet hook 4โ€“5 mm (long hook or with a cable). Honestly for my scarf Iโ€™ve used a common hook, but it might be tricky for using Tunisian crochet for the first time
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
  • Scissors
  • Optional: A cup of butter bear and your favourite Hogwarts playlist(Iโ€™ll link my below)

๐Ÿ“ Gauge

  • Big main part 28 stitches ร— 24 rows = 10 ร— 15 cm
  • Whole block 28 stitches ร— 31 rows = 24 main color, 2 secondary, 3 main, 2 secondary
Note: You can change this to suit your preferred width.

โœจ Step-by-Step Guide

1. Foundation

Chain 28 stitches (or adjust for your preferred width).

Pick up loops along the chain using Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) โ€“ one loop on your hook per chain.

Begin your first row by working into the back bumps and keeping all loops on the hook

2. Forward & Return Pass

For Tunisian crochet, each row is made of two parts:

  • Forward pass: Pick up stitches across the row. From the second row work into the vertical bars.

  • Return pass: Yarn over, pull through one loop (edge stitch)

Then yarn over and pull through the two remaining loops until only one loop remains.

Here is a wonderful video tutorial on Tunisian Knit Stitch.

3. Main Colour Section

Work 24 rows in your main colour. This forms the first solid block.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Keep your tension loose to avoid curling.

4. Stripe Section

Change to your contrast colour. Work 2 rows in this colour.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Change the colour when you close the last stitch of the row to avoid a messy change.

Continue alternating until the scarf reaches your desired length โ€“ the traditional Hogwarts scarf has about 12 blocks in total.

5. Finishing

When youโ€™re happy with the length:

  • To finish the last row, simply make a single crochet stitch across.
  • Cut yarn, leaving a small tail.
  • Weave in ends carefully.

6. Wet Blocking (Optional but recommended)

To soften the fabric and relax the stitches:

  1. Soak the scarf in lukewarm water for 10โ€“15 minutes.
  2. Gently squeeze out the excess water โ€“ donโ€™t wring!
  3. Lay it flat on a towel, shape evenly, and let it air dry completely.

7. Add Finishing Touches

Add tassels or fringe at both ends if you like. It gives the scarf a classic, wizardly feel.
